Bagdad Portable

Bagdad Portable by Mathieu Matégot for Gubi.

The Bagdad Portable Lamp, launched in 2024, is a scaled-down version of Mathieu Matégot’s original 1954 design. The light draws inspiration from Middle Eastern lanterns. It features a cubist construction made with Matégot’s signature ‘rigitulle’ technique, whereby sheet metal is folded and perforated to create a lace-like effect.

Measuring half the size of the original, decorative features have been adapted to become functional parts of the light in the smaller version; the ‘tail’ doubles as a handle for ease of movement and the brass ball at the top of the lamp now functions as a touch-activated dimmer mechanism.

Available in Black, White, and International Orange, the portable lamp offers up to 50 hours of light at 10% intensity. The UV-resistant powder coating ensures it’s suitable for outdoor use, provided it remains dry.
