Eero Saarinen’s iconic Tulip collection was born out of his desire to simplify the design of tables by eliminating what he called “the slum of legs” that bedevilled conventional tables with four legs. Drawing on his early training as a sculptor, Saarinen aimed to realise his ideal of formal unity by designing the Tulip tables and chairs.
The result is the Tulip Collection, designed in 1957. The timeless range is instantly recognisable, with the table’s minimal, sculptural pedestal base elevated by an elegant oval top.
